Troubleshoot a problem

How do I troubleshoot a VOCOM problem?

Follow the recommended troubleshooting steps.

Use the troubleshooting help to find the likely causes and recommended actions for specific problems.

Is the problem still not resolved?

Contact support and make sure to include the log files.

Recommended troubleshooting steps

  1. Make sure the vehicle ignition key is in the ON position.

  2. Check the instrument cluster and confirm the battery voltage is within the expected range.

  3. Inspect the vehicle cable for damage.

  4. Check that no connector pins are bent or broken.

  5. Confirm that the VOCOM indicator light status matches the expected behavior for your operating mode and device variant.

  6. Isolate the problem by swapping components with ones known to work:
    • Try a different vehicle cable.
    • Try a different USB cable.
    • Try a different USB port on the computer.
    • Try a different VOCOM device.
    • Try a different computer.

  7. If you are using WLAN, make sure the WLAN connection is working properly. For advanced WLAN checks, contact your local IT support.

Troubleshooting help

Case 1 - VOCOM Tough connected via USB

This usually indicates that your firewall is blocking VOCOM communication.

  1. To verify that the required USB ports are open:
    • Open VOCOM Configurator and run Options > Connectivity check.

  2. If the Connectivity check cannot detect any USB devices, there is likely a USB connection issue:
    • Try a different USB port on the computer.

  3. If the problem remains:
    • Open Windows Start and search for Device Manager.
    • Under Network adapters, you should see VOCOM Tough.
    • If you don’t, look for an Unknown device (driver or detection issue). Try updating the USB drivers.

Case 2: VOCOM Mini connected to a vehicle (wireless)

  1. Connect your computer to the VOCOM Wi‑Fi access point (via your network settings).

  2. If you are connected to the access point but still can’t see the device in VOCOM Configurator, the most likely cause is that the firewall is blocking VOCOM communication.

  3. Connectivity check does not validate wireless communication. To confirm ports are open, you can:
    • Use a VOCOM Tough over USB to run the Connectivity Check, or
    • Ensure the required ports are allowed in the firewall. Contact your system administrator if needed.

For VOCOM hardware to operate correctly, the required firewall rules must be in place.

If you are using Windows Defender Firewall, the VOCOM installer normally creates these rules automatically during installation.

VOCOM II LOCATEDirection: Inbound Protocol: UDP Port: 427
VOCOM II HTTPDirection: Outbound Protocol: TCP Port: 80
VOCOM II RP1210Direction: Outbound Protocol: TCP Port: 27015
VOCOM II J2534Direction: Outbound Protocol: TCP Port: 2534

The most common causes include:

  • A firewall is blocking VOCOM communication.
  • A VPN connection is blocking VOCOM communication.
  • An issue with the Microsoft USB driver installation.
  • A damaged USB port.
  • A damaged USB cable.
  • A defective VOCOM device.

POSSIBLE CAUSERECOMMENDED ACTION
The VOCOM access point has not yet started.Wait for about 12 seconds for the access point to start.
Windows has not automatically refreshed the list of available Wi-Fi networks.Open and close the Wi‑Fi network list to force a refresh.
The device is no longer using its default configuration.Reset the device. See Reset configuration.

POSSIBLE CAUSERECOMMENDED ACTION
The device is no longer using its default configuration.Reset the device. See Reset configuration.
You are trying to connect to the wrong VOCOM Mini device.Select the correct VOCOM Mini SSID (verify the device label/serial if needed) and reconnect.
The VOCOM Mini device is out of range.Move closer to the device, ensure it is powered on, and try again.

POSSIBLE CAUSERECOMMENDED ACTION
The device could not connect to the network, most likely due to an incorrect username or password.Verify that the network credentials are correct and try again.

POSSIBLE CAUSERECOMMENDED ACTION
This indicates that the device is successfully connected to the configured network. If the device still does not appear in Configurator, the most likely cause is that multicast discovery is blocked on the network.
  • Confirm that the network allows multicast traffic.
  • As a workaround, enable Unicast to your PC for this VOCOM and verify that the device then appears in Configurator.

POSSIBLE CAUSERECOMMENDED ACTION
The configuration is incorrect and the VOCOM cannot find the network; for example, the network name (SSID) was changed accidentally.Verify that the network name (SSID) and the login credentials are correct.
The configuration was not saved, so the VOCOM II is still hosting its own access point (you will still see the VOCOM Wi‑Fi access point in Windows). After entering the network details, click Save, then restart the VOCOM for the changes to take effect.

POSSIBLE CAUSERECOMMENDED ACTION
The VOCOM notification pops up but disappears after some time.

Follow these instructions:

  • Open the VOCOM Configurator on your computer.
  • Go to Select device.
  • Select the VOCOM Mini device.

VOCOM Mini is now paired with your computer.

POSSIBLE CAUSERECOMMENDED ACTION
The device is no longer using its default configuration.Reset the device, see Reset configuration.
You connected the wrong VOCOM Mini device.Disconnect and connect to the correct VOCOM Mini (verify SSID/device label).
The VOCOM Mini is out of range.Move closer to the device and ensure it is powered.
Notifications are disabled.Enable notifications in Windows settings and ensure they are allowed for the relevant application.

VOCOM errors

The VOCOM device saves certain events in an internal Device Error List.

See VOCOM Configurator > Status tab.

Most stored error codes are simply logged events for your information. They do not necessarily indicate that the device is defective. Use the list below to identify the likely cause of each error code and the recommended troubleshooting steps.
