What does signal strength refer to?

Note: Software programming is not recommended when the signal strength is weak.

Signal strength in access point mode

To ensure a good signal strength, keep your computer close to the vehicle/equipment that is connected to the VOCOM device and minimize obstacles such as walls, large cabinets, other vehicles, etc. in between.

In access point mode, the Wi‑Fi router is not used. The VOCOM device creates its own Wi‑Fi network, and the computer connects directly to that network. The same applies in Android mode. The Android device closest to the vehicle that is connected to the VOCOM device will have the strongest signal.

The image below shows that the workshop computer closest to the VOCOM device connected to the vehicle will have the strongest signal.

Signal strength in infrastructure mode

In infrastructure mode, a strong connection is very important because communication is affected by the distance between the VOCOM device, and the computer, to the Wi‑Fi router.

Since both VOCOM and the computer connect to the same router, the signal typically becomes weaker as either device moves farther away. The connection is usually strongest when both the VOCOM device and the computer are close to the router.

Obstacles between the router and the computer or VOCOM, such as walls, vehicles, or equipment, can also make the connection unstable. For best results, keep the vehicle with the VOCOM device and the computer near the router and minimize obstacles between them.

The image below shows that the computer closest to the Wi-Fi router will receive the strongest signal. The computer farthest away from the Wi-Fi router will have a weak signal.
